Blue Skies and Groomed Pistes
Sunny skies and groomed pistes
It's been another dreamy week on the snow in the Espace Killy!
I'm starting to feel like a broken record writing these resorts as we experience week after week of blue skies and hard-packed but perfectly groomed pistes.
There are more British guests now on the mountain than in the previous weeks, but there seem to be fewer other nationalities on the snow. Which means that the mountain is still very quiet. There are small queues - if any! - and often you are on the ski runs all by yourself.
Another great thing about the quiet mountain is that if you are joining ski school, your classes are much smaller, making learning a bit easier and quicker.
Snow Report
The current conditions in the resort are fantastic on piste. The runs are hard-packed but not generally icy. Some spots have iced up - it's mainly the places in direct sunlight all day, slopes that have just one part that are in the sun, catch you out at the moment!
Off-piste is really melting away. Mountain sides are becoming more patchy, with rocks, trees, and bushes showing through quite clearly.
So while I am incredibly optimistic about the snow conditions, you can clearly see that we need some more snow!
Snow Forecast
As it stands, there is no snow forecast in the next week. Temperatures remain consistent, always hovering around 0 - 1C during the days and dropping below zero at night. We usually have some really falls and spikes in temperature throughout January, but we haven't seen this yet.
I think that we haven't had these significant fluctuations in temperature is what is maintaining the pistes so well - we aren't experiencing days of big snow-thaws and then refreezing each night.
That plus the great job being done by the mountain patrol!
Jen's Top Tips
- While the pistes are quiet if you head out during the midday lunch break - 12 - 14h, it is often like having a private mountain to explore!
- As I’ve said, the pistes are hard-packed, but the snow on the sides of the runs is often softer. Keep to the sides of the pistes for a more effortless, less icy experience.
- Although temperatures are pretty consistent, it is cold in the wind. Be aware of some ski lifts. You will feel the cold! Keep wrapped up, with buffs - and of course, face masks!
